2nd phase cognition drug trial - footnote added

Like I've said in the past, I won't be the first one standing in kind if a drug like this reaches the market for people with DS but I think it's good to keep an eye on these things.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/elan-announces-dosing-of-first-patient-in-phase-2a-trial-of-elnd005-scyllo-inositol-in-down-syndrome-2013-09-03

Just a footnote as I had question from a reader:

We are not planning to be first in line for any sort of "cure" or cognitive boosting meds. I would hope that the discovery of a drug would lead to the discovery of a parallel type of natural treatment. I'm not saying that we would never consider a drug type treatment either butvwecavoid all types of medications whenever possible so I'd have to be assured by lots of testing that the side effects are worth the benefits. So far the results of K's neurodevelopmental program far outweigh any supplements I've heard of. Like most things in life, the benefits ilof hard work outweigh the quick fix.

Recent Research on a Drug to Help with Cognition

Here is a link to a recent study in a drug to help cognition in people with a trisomy 21.  As I have said before, drugs are not the first approach that I would use & although I won't be first in line to sign K up for any research studies for prescription drugs to help with cognition any time soon, it is something I like to be aware of.

What are your thoughts on this study & the subject of using drugs to help with cognition?

Drug Trial for Down Syndrome

This is a link to a study on a drug that may possibly help with cognition in people with Down syndrome.

I find this intriguing, & although I am very interested in helping K to learn & become more independant, I won't be first in line with a prescription. All drugs have side effects & I would have to research this very well before I made a decision. If it turned out to be very safe & we felt the benefits outweighed any side effects, then we would likely try it, but again, I am very cautious & almost always treat anything with natural means first.  I can't remember the last time that I filled a prescription at the drug store. On the other hand, we would treat any other medical condition that developed, so why would we not treat this one?

I also believe in doing everything possible to help K to reach her full potential - who knows if anything will ever come of this or other research anyways?  Not only that, if there is ever a drug like this that can help, the further ahead she is to start with, the better.
